CHON-JI PATTERN

CHON-JI: "The Heaven and the Earth." - 19 Movements - White Belt

1.    Look L, step L foot 1/4 turn into L front stance- L Low Block

2.   Step R foot forward into R front stance- R Middle Punch

3.   Pick up front foot-spin R-half turn opposite into R front stance- R Low Block

4.   Step L foot forward into L front stance - L Middle Punch

5.   Step L foot 1/4 turn to L-L Low Block

6.   Step R foot forward into R front stance- R Middle Punch

7.   Step front foot-spin R-half turn opposite into R front stance- R Low Block

8.   Step L foot forward into L front stance - L Middle Punch

9.   Look L, step L foot 1/4 turn into L back stance- L Inner Forearm Block

10.  Step R foot forward into R front stance- R Middle Punch

11.  Step front foot-spin R-half turn opposite into R back stance- R Inner Forearm Block

12.  Step L foot forward into L front stance - L Middle Punch

13.  Step L foot 1/4 turn to L-L Inner Forearm Block

Definition of CHON-JI: (19 Moves, left foot returns,step forward) Literally means "the Heaven and the Earth."  It is, in the Orient, interpreted as the creation of the world or the beginning of human history.  Therefore, it is the initial pattern played by the beginner.  This pattern consists of two similar parts: One to represent Heaven and the other the Earth.

 

Pattern Reminders:

Directions are: Left / Opposite , Left / Opposite

Always pick up the front foot when turning.

Always turn over the shoulder of the hand you just punched with.

When finished always step L foot forward to Ba-ro stance.

 

DEFINITION OF THE WHITE BELT :

Signifies innocence, as that of the beginning student who has no previous Knowledge of Taekwon-do.

 

  White Belt Floor Drills

                 Parallel Ready Stance

  1) Left foot steps forward to a left front stance while making a left high block;

       Advance to right front stance, right high block;

       Advance to left front stance, left high block;

       Advance to right front stance, right high block;

       Retreat to left front stance, left high block;

       Retreat to right front stance, right high block;

       Retreat to left front stance, left high block;

     2) Advance to right front stance, right high block, double punch (rear hand punches first)

    Advance to left front stance, left high block, double punch;

       Advance to right front stance, right high block, double punch;

       Retreat to left front stance, left high block, double punch;

       Retreat to right front stance, right high block, double punch;

       Retreat to left front stance, left high block, double punch;

  3) Advance with a rear leg front kick, landing in a right front stance, right high block, double punch;

       Advance with a rear leg front kick, landing in a left front stance, left high block, double punch;

       Advance a rear leg front kick, landing in a right front stance, right high block, double punch;

       About face, left front stance, left high block, double punch;

       Advance with a rear leg front kick, landing in a right front stance, right high block, double punch;

       Advance a rear leg front kick, landing in a left front stance, left high block, double punch;

       Advance with a rear leg front kick, landing in a right front stance, right high block, double punch;

       About face, left front stance,  left high block, double punch;

       Left foot returns to parallel ready stance.

  4) Step forward with the left foot to a middle stance while making a left knife hand strike;

       Advance three (3) times by stepping behind, landing in a middle stance while making a left knife hand strike.

       Turn, facing the opposite direction and making a right knife hand strike;

       Advance three (3) times by stepping behind, landing in a middle stance while making a right knife hand strike.

  5) Turn, facing the opposite direction and making a left knife hand strike;

       Advance three (3) times by step behind sidekick, landing in a middle stance while making a left knife hand strike.

       Turn, facing the opposite direction and making a right knife hand strike;

       Advance three (3) times by step behind sidekick, landing in a middle stance while making a right knife hand strike.

       Turn, facing the opposite direction and making a left knife hand strike;

       Left foot returns to parallel ready stance.

  6) Step backward with the right foot to a middle stance while making double guarding blocks;

       Advance three (3) times by making a turning round kick and landing in a middle stance while holding the double guarding block.

       Turn and make a double guarding block in the opposite direction.

       Advance three (3) times by making a turning round kick and landing in a middle stance while holding the double guarding block.

       Turn and make a double guarding block in the opposite direction.

       Right foot returns to parallel ready stance.

Tournament competition judged in 2 areas: Patterns and the Floor drills above.

HOW TO TIE YOUR BELT

Start stripe end of belt on the left hip.

Wrap belt to the right front around you.

Wrap belt over itself a second time around you .

Grab left end of belt with left hand and right end with your right.

Tighten comfortably and even the ends out to your sides.

Put right end of belt underneath wrapped belt near front abdomen and pull up and to the right.

Tighten again to desired comfort and even the ends out to your sides.

Place right side over left creating a closed circle with belt ends overlapping each other and pointing opposite.

Pinch overlapped parts of the belt with right hand fingers.

Tuck right end of belt (which is now pointing left) under and up through circle with left hand to create a knot. Open side hole of knot should face to the right. Belt ends should be hanging down evenly. Striped end of belt should be on the right.

 

UNIFORM INFORMATION

All uniforms must be white with no writing on the back unless with special permission.

A uniform should always feel big enough so as not to restrict movement.

A new uniform should always feel a little too big.

Expect your uniform to shrink or tighten up a little after repeated washings.

If your uniform is too long,  fold it over at the waist-then tighten.

Avoid cuffing pant legs to shorten, cuffs come out while kicking causing discomfort and distraction during your workout.

When closing uniform top, fold left side over right

CTF patch goes on the upper left front chest side.

 

TESTING INFORMATION

Testings are generally held approximately every two months. Not every student is ready to test within this time frame.  Some schools hold a testing at their own school on a bi-monthly format between regular testings for the advancement of students ready at that time. You must have the approval from your instructor to take part in any test.

 

WHITE BELT TEST CONSISTS OF:

                                                                        1. Performing all patterns of your rank.

                                                                        2. Performing White belt floor drills of your rank.

                                                                        3. General Knowledge questions.

                                                                            a. Student oath.

                                                                            b. Belt color definition.

                                                                            c. In class curriculum.

           

 

TESTING SUGGESTIONS

1.             It is appropriate and mandatory to reply loudly and distinctively, Yes Sir or Yes Mam, whichever applies when you are called out onto the testing floor by the judges.

2.             Move quickly to your designated spot.

3.             Stand feet together hands at your sides in respectable fashion when called out to go to your spot or up to the judges table for questioning.

4.             Do not lean on or touch the judges table during questioning.

5.             Confident Eye Contact during entire testing is important.

6.             Loud Ki-Hap.  

7.             Speak in a Loud And Legible Voice.

8.             Straighten uniform into a presentable fashion by turning away  from the judges in respect and turning back when finished.

 

Remember, nervousness is a natural feeling.  These testings are designed to help  prepare you for moments like these and teach you how to channel your nervousness so as to conduct yourself with confidence and self-control in a challenging environment.
